Fitting a T500 pot dome to a 5star milk can

Postby Rolls912 » Thu Dec 27, 2018 10:30 pm

I’ve purchased the milk can from Andrew. Nice kit.

I’ve used it for the reflux component of the T500 to reduce the burning / Sulphur taste (the element is suspended in the liquid opposed to using the urn scorching the sediment).

First question:
I now need to do a stripping run. Would I be better to use the ol dome head with the T5 urn and burn the f*+k out of the wash again? Or, is there a way of making an adapter to fit the dome head to the milk can?

This is what the dome looks like:
https://stillspirits.com/products/the-a ... -pot-still

Second question:
I need to do a flavouring run for Gin to keep the Mrs in support mode (opposed to how much did that cost mode). Same dilemma as above. Burn or is there a way of adapting to use the milk can.

Thanks in advance for any advice. :text-thankyoublue:

I dont think the dome would fit over a milk can. The milk can has a 4" ferule and the dome looks a lot bigger then 4" but i have never used a Dome lid before.

Have you tried measuring it?

Yes the dome is a lot wider than the Milk can head.

I’m asking as I’m sure I wouldn’t be the only one in this dilemma - has someone figure out a way to modify it to fit the top of the milk can?

I think the condencer on the dome will not be able ta handle the output from a 50lt boiler unless you can dial power right down ,wich is not what ya do with a stripping run, when I do gin infusions I use the 25lt boiler and small lieburg with 900wt element and put the botanicals in a SS mesh ball from the brew shop suspended underneath the output(inside) to the condencer, the gin thread may be a good place to snoop and post.cheers hillzabilly :handgestures-thumbupleft:

The condenser on the T500 Alembic dome is way too small. I found it wasn't even adequate enough for the T500 boiler. You would be better off doing two spirit runs with the reflux column to give you some super clean neutral unless you can easily get your hands on a better pot still.

Sell the dome and put the money towards some copper to make a simple pot still.
What still is currently used on the milk can?

Can you use the big silver plate you took off the bottom of the t500 column? If you could clamp them together, you would then be working with a 2" hole. It would look like very strange onion head still on top of your milk can.

Nothing really worked. Good idea though Deryn.

Yes... suckered into buying the pot still. Andrew deserves some sort of saleman of the year award. Maybe we should dust off the tin-man award from the 60’s or something...

I’ll post some pics when the gear arrives with all of the mods I’ve made. Staring to knock on the door of $2k so the shit that it puts out had better be gooooodd!

You won't regret it mate, 5 Star make top notch gear and it will last you a lifetime. Did you go for the 2 or the 4 inch pot? Either way, the it can be used as a foundation for a bubbler or a neutraliser later on should you decide upgrade later (and I reckon you probably will).
