Neutral wash for gin?

Postby Matt_Pl » Thu Feb 07, 2019 7:51 pm

Hi All,

I am probably opening up a can of worms here, but I am curious what neutral wash people prefer when making gin.

I understand its hearts of hearts run.

Do people carbon filter the hearts prior to final gin run??

Please dont mention Turbo yeast cause I know you be trolling....

Thanks lads and ladettes.

The Weetbix and Bran wash seem to give a better outcome than tomato paste wash

I like WBAB for my neutral base. I seem to recall The Doctor, who makes award winning spirits, mention preferring TPW. It will basically come down to personal preference. Try a few washes and see which you like best.

Kale wash makes a great base for gin. But as stated prior, it's personal preference. Just ensure that whatever you use, it's nice and clean.

Have been trialing a few batchs with wheat malt extract(the stuff with no hops) in place of tom paste, and CL23 wine yeast instead of bakers, wash has a beer like smell and takes a bit longer ta ferment out, early days yet but resulting neutral has a better mouth feel and taste, along the lines of a proper wheat grain vodka wich should be smooth and a good base for gin.cheers hillzabilly ;-)

Ooh, now that sounds rather interesting, I might have to give that one a go myself.

I tried a single malt vodka in Scotland a few years ago and the m mouthfeel and taste were very similar to that of WBAB neutral.

Sure,for a 25lt batch
350-400ml wheat malt extract (make sure ya get the one with no hops)
6kg white sugar(I never use more than 6kg/25lt batch)
1/2tsp citric acid
1tsp gypsum
1 by 8gr pack of CL23 wine yeast
I dissolve the extract in a couple liters of hot water add it to the fermenter, with the sugar then top up with cool water, mix to dissolve all suger, then put the citric acid and gypsum in 250ml hot water and mix well(keep separate at this stage),check the PH of the wash,I aim for 5.5PH,then add the citric acid gypsum mix in small amounts until you reach 5.5PH,aerate the wash by circulation or paint stirrer ,air stone etc.Pitch yeast at 25-27'c and leave to ferment for 2 weeks.Note this yeast is slow compared ta turdbo or even bakers with very little air lock action wich will have most thinking something is wrong,it just fizzes away slowly .As I said its something I am trialing so I make no promises ,but have my 3rd 175lt batch going now and am very pleased with the results.cheers hillzabilly ;-)

Happy ta give ya something else to experiment with :laughing-rolling: ,depending on your source water PH you may need a second citric acid gypsum mix to get it down enough, yeast is rated at 14-32'c wich is one of the widest ranges I have come across.cheers hillzabilly

If you can get the grain flavour without the mashing nightmare, and up and down results then I am on board that train, extract is a good way ta me ,it is cheaper the more ya buy to.Am looking to try all extract for vodka and whiskey down the road with quite a few different varieties available,so this is my starting point.cheers hillzabilly :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I have ordered this one on this weeks home delivery. A bit more expensive than TP but I will be keen to see how it comes out. The high level Vitamin B content should make the yeast very happy.

I am using Coopers wheat malt extract liquid,is the stuff from woolies dry or liquid ? wich may effect amounts.A 1.1lt can of coopers will give enough for three 25lt batchs @367ml / batch, yes yeasties seem ta love it have used it for starters as well instead of plain sugar because of the high nutrient level.cheers hillzabilly :handgestures-thumbupleft:

If your using wheat malt extract liquid may find its a lot cheaper to buy a kilo of malted wheat grain and mash the grain local home brew shop has 1 kg at $2.85 that would probably give a couple of washes do not think they sell the wheat extract at the super markets in qld.

The malt extract is a concentrate ,ie,there would be a lot more than 1kg worth of grain in a 1.1lt tin,the beer guys will have a better idear of how much grain a tin full is worth, less the time and effort plus extra mashing equipment and cleaning for a not so consistent result and less chance of infections ,I intend to get a decent mashing setup down the road when a couple of grand drop into my hands,I started thinking about it after visiting Sullivan's cove distillery in Hobart and was a little shocked ta hear the makers of the worlds best whiskey got the beer brewery up the road to supply their wash with no mashing at all on site, wich ta me is relatively the same thing.cheers hillzabilly ;-)
