Jars for storing your spirts in

Postby Snibbo » Thu Apr 04, 2019 4:32 pm

Im not finding much on this topic. I have a heap of glass jars but I notice the lids have like a rubber lining in them to help the seal. Are these ok for spirits? If not where do I source some bottles? Cheers

The smaller to medium ;-) jars are fine for cuts containers, but for storage most start with proprietary liquor bottles, then get a few 5lt demijohns.Gumtree can be a good sorce or 2lt flagons and bottles available from HBS.cheers hillzabilly

Some of the 5 litre demijohns come with flip tops that have rubber seals but you can get small silicon bungs that fit in the necks perfectly.

People call them either,a carboy ta me is a 5US gal or 19lt glass container snoop https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-vic/demijo ... ?sort=rank but what you call them is up to you,we try and use the same terminology so everyone gets it ,silicone seals or bungs are ideal and not that hard ta sort out these days,I have at times even used glass marbles on smaller bottles .cheers hillzabilly ;-)

For oaking my spirit I brought 2 and 3 litre swing top jars from Kmart. Took the red rubber seal off and put folded up kitchen paper over the top and closed the lid.
That way I have a decent seal that keeps dust out and still lets the angels take their share.
For bottling I use any spirit bottle that I have.

:text-+1: with plumby on Kmart, I got a few different sizes of jars etc from them over the years, and look through the $1 shops, I just picked up 10L jars from one up here that’s perfect for blending cuts from a big run :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I use Plumby's idea on the 5L demijons.

Do you fellas filter aged spirit? Floaties are giving me the shits and the coffee filters block up and take forever. Thinking maybe setup a buchaner funnel outta stainless fittings with a mild vacuum to speed up the proccess through coffee filters also can be used to chill filter thoughts?

Can be a bit of a problem...
When i have a fair few floaties i strain through a good cotton pillow case first and then coffee filter. The 2 layers of cotton do a good job and it can be moved around as is clogs up.

I don’t filter, I think the floaties make it legit, plus isn’t charcoal good for your teeth? So really I’m brushing my teeth with every drink

Ok so silicon bungs are good and i might give Al foil a go.

2 last questions how about using regular wine bottles with a cork? and ... what about the port bottles I buy with a screw on lid? im kinda thinking once the initial seal is broken they wont seal up great again but I if corks are ok problem solved there.

Cheers for all the info so far

I use these 3.8 litre ones from kmart. Big cork top on them and really solid. I also have 1litres ones too.

They also have 500ml and 2.8litre ones aswell but you might find it easier to find them online.

I'd be wary of those large corks, they're usually composites mate smaller bits of cork and glue so are probably not that safe to use with spirits.

These are cheap and perfect for wide mouth mason jars of any size - https://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item. ... emid=23488 - been using mine for long time. Cork will allow evap and loss of ABV, both foil and waxed paper allow vapors thru that affect your old rubber seals. :D
