Tomato paste wash

Postby Handyandy180 » Sat Apr 06, 2019 8:30 am

Hi all,
I have been trying to get as much info from this site as I can before my first turbo wash is ready. When I came across the Tomato paste recipe!!
I was just wondering whether this wash would be able to be used in conjunction with my air still and if so would the quality of the finished product be better? Also what sort of yield would I likely get?
Many thanks

Hi mate,

TPW is far superior to the turbo when run through a column but neither of them are really suited to the air still because it is essentially a pot still and won't strip the undesirable flavours unless you run the product through many, many times. With TPW you'll actually end up making a tomato whiskey! I would recommend one of the cereal based washes (CFW, WBAB etc) as at least any residual flavours will be pleasant grainy ones.

:text-+1: Having run turbo wash, TPW and WBAB through an Air Still in the past, the cereal based washes are much better suited. Be sure to follow the double distilling method outlined in a thread on here somewhere (there's a brilliant flow diagram) and you'll get a decent result.

Hey, Handyandy180.

Turbo is an inferior yeast as it is loaded with nutrients that stresses the yeast,
raises the ABV to ridiculous levels, and just imparts an inferior product.

Please stick with an advised yeast such as plain bakers yeast or DADY or whatever the recipe calls for.
You'll save money avoiding the expense, too.

Best of luck to you!

I use a single packet of "Pure Distilling" Premium Spirit Yeast split between two 23 litre TPW fermenters and then double still the result in the Reflux T500 with two fairly tight roles of copper mesh in the column. Not too tight or "puking" may result. No saddles. Very happy with the quality.
