Stripping runs

Postby Snibbo » Wed Apr 10, 2019 7:59 pm

I read the newbie section on this but I would like to double check my process before I do something dumb. Im aiming for a neutral spirit using a reflux still. I am planing to to use 2x20ltr of mash.

1 is complete and run through the still. Im making the second batch of mash now. my question is when I run my second mash through do I add the spirits from the 1st run or do I strip again and then do a run with the spirits from both runs? Also if I am doing a run with only spirits do i need to add something to it like water?

Cheers for your help

Just re run the stripped alcohol add water till its 40% or below and it covers the elements :handgestures-thumbupleft: after ditching foreshots collect in small amounts 200-300ml then after airing for 24hrs choose the good ones(most neutral). Some say its not nessacary but I do fores cut on both runs when stripping...

Just adding to what bluc said, the process should be something like this:

    1. Strip wash # 1 and put the resulting low wines aside (You've already done this).
    2. Strip wash # 2 once it's fermented and add the resulting low wines to those from the first strip.
    3. Dilute the combined low wines to bring the ABV down to 40% or lower.
    4. Spirit run the diluted low wines.

I'm curious as to the reasons to dilute the low wines to 40% for the spirit run? Is that too bulk up the liquid to avoid running the still too low and exposing elements?

That and the normally below 40% will not catch fire or explode
