Boil enhancers/ conditioner in reflux still

Postby Sideboob » Mon May 20, 2019 4:58 pm

I've never used conditioner in my airstill but always used boil enhancers. My new reflux come with a bottle of conditioner. Is it necessary to always use this? And if so can it be replaced with some thing I can get at the supermarket?

Cheers

Good quality olive oil or butter both work, all I ever used in my reflux still.

If i use olive oil I use a good glug ( accurate measurement I know ) if I use butter ( proper butter, not that easy spread from the fridge butter or that margarine shit ) I use about a tablespoon worth.

I think I have said this before but wouldn't boil enhancers only be of use if the heat source is below them? If they're on the bottom of a keg with an immersion element above them, I don't think they would do anything would they?

DimethylPolysiloxane absolutely works. And is used in most vegetable oil as a defoamer. I bought a bottle and use it with the rum.. it's silicone based and apparently doesn't carry over after distillation. I tried bran oil and olive oil in early days with my pot still but I reakon flavour carried over. Have not tried it with bubbler.
I recently clarified some butter to try with my rum but yet to try it..
