Birdwatchers TPW Fermenting stopped

Postby grasmere » Wed Jul 31, 2019 10:08 am

After a week my TPW has stopped bubbling
I have: 30 Ltrs in 35 Ltr Fermenter
300 Ltrs Tomato Paste
1 Lemon
7 Kg Sugar
2 Tablespoons Lowan Bakers yeast
1/4 tsp Epson Salts
I have maintained as far as possible temp between 22c and 28c with the help of heater belt and blankets, recently bought a heater Pad.
I added 2 tablespoons of yeast yesterday, but no effect
The acidity has been low at 3ph and I added 2 Tsps of Calcium Carbonate to raise it to 5.5ph
The starting sg was 1.9 it is now 1.5
Any assistance would be appreciated

Just did a sg it reads 1.3 and so maybe my 35 Ltr Handy container isn't sealing properly

Maybe you could use less tomato paste, 300 litres is a little too much :)

Thanks for the replies. I am trying to work out how to seal the inside rim of the lid.
Tried taping the outside and did a soapy water test for bubbles, nothing there.
The advice about too much Tomato Paste is appreciated

Lets's presume you mean 300mls. Even though TP has a quite low pH (3.5 - 4.5) that should not be low enough to interfere with the yeast.

Don't sweat the sealing just give it time. TPW is nowhere as fast as TFFV

Too much sugar to start with.

Too much lemon has lowered your PH.

How good is your PH meter?

Too many other variables as well but these would be the main points

Apologies, that should have read 300 gms Tomato Paste. I used Birdwatcher TPW Calculator in arriving at the ingredients
Recommended Sugar was 6.75kg and lemon juice 1.1 whole lemon ( how to work that out is a problem) Less in my next TPW Wash
In the last couple of days it has started to bubble again through the air lock
Both TPW and Weetbix All Bran Washes are bubbling away now at 1.25sg appx
The hydrometer is the type with SG, and appx sugar per litre scales, and another with a narrower reading.
So it would appear that it was always fermenting, but not enough to move the bubbler and I can rule out leakage around the rim.
Thank you once again for the replies
