Ageing spirit

Postby jman69 » Tue Dec 24, 2019 6:13 pm

Just wondering if a old five litre port keg can be used to age spirit?

Thanks boys, I'm new to this game but made my first spirit the other week and it turned out pretty good. I had a friend at work (a whisky afficionardo) taste it and got a big thumbs up. Tomorrow i"m picking up an old fridge so i can ferment through the hotter months. So Stig, i don't think i can let you ''Dispose of it '' for me. sorry.
Sam, how long would you estimate ageing in a five litre keg??
Just to be clear the spirit would be watered down to 40% yeah?
Thankyou to all you're advice and merry xmas.
Dave.

Depending on your climate if cool up to 6 months if hot only a couple.

Don’t go 40% in a barrel it will just be a wet oak taste, you want it in between 60 - 65% there is a chart on here somewhere hopefully someone that’s not on their phone can link it for me :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I reckon there is another one with different ABV, but that one is a good reference for ratios :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Ah that’s the toast/char temp for the oak not ABV. Maybe I dreamt there was a chart for ABV 8-}
