Heads as hand Sanitizer

Postby davesims » Wed Mar 11, 2020 12:59 pm

Hey all

I have about 5 or 6 liters of heads that have been collected over time, would this be ok to use to make hand sanitizer if over 60%

All I know is that we went to send some Hand Sanitiser down to our daughter in Melbourne because they are all out down there and we couldn't do it because it was apparently 75% alcohol. Don't know if that info is of any help or not

I think the prof said labs use over 75%?

Using heads would stink, if you could put something in it to make it smell better maybe...

Hand sanitiser (ethanol based) is generally a gel to reduce the risk of splashing into your eye and lengthen the contact time to allow it to do the job. I'm not sure I'd be keen to wash my hands in whats likely to be mostly acetone, from using the heads.

If I were to do it I would keep the last jar before hearts, pretty sure that wont be mostly acetone.

I wouldn't want to touch too much of it. Methanol absorbs through the skin - I'm sure all the other alcohols are much the same. As bluc said, if its not drinkable tread with caution.

Allright then, use pure hearts and get pissed at the same time :laughing-rolling: You might have some very dry skin.

Alternatively wait until everyone settles the fuck down and stops buying everything they can off the shelf and buy some normal hand sanitiser....

Hand sanitizer is unnecessary.

Water. Soap. Scrub for 20 seconds. Rinse. Dry. Done.

Some info I heard:

20% of heads or other (vodka...anything really), 40%ABV is best.

1 cup of alcohol, 1 teaspoon of tea-tree oil, 2 teaspoons of glycerine. Mix it all up and away you go. The oil helps with smell, and the glycerine helps drying of the skin.

Cheers,

Tea-tree oil kills viruses and fungal plus could also look at some eucalyptus oil .

this is the formula recommended by the WHO.
I just made some, my wife’s always used hand sanitizer.

I would just stress to anyone that is going to make it that the production of the ethanol is illegal and you cannot by any means sell hand sanitizer.

The microbiologists at my work used a 70%abv alcohol solution to swab down the work area before testing and sprayed a bit on their hands etc. while working. I did not find this a problem for my skin and it seemed to work well. We generally did not get false positive results from the area not being well enough sterilised. At 70% the osmotic pressure between the alcohol and water is just right for the alcohol to penetrate cell walls and the micro-organisms are more vulnerable. So our micro-biologists said. They did lots of routine food and water testing for yeasts, molds, bacteria and other spoilage organisms.
Cheers,

The corona virus is an easy kill with alcohol so could use as a surface sanitiser but if use high alcohol content could maybe damage some surfaces .
The other option to use is iodine as there are plenty of those on the market and some sold in brew shops but only small quantity and with the alcohol no need to wash off where others probably need to be washed off or use a disposable wipe or one that can be washed.

I have been making hand sanitiser in 2 forms.
1 - using 92% feints down to 66% and then the rest body wash.
Simple- smells great but isn’t gel like.

2 - using 92% feints down to 66% and then water, glycerol or aloe gel , xantahan gum to make it gel like
And some smelly stuff.

It’s still66% . Who says don’t gel but you do need water or a surfactant. So it spreads and stays.
This is only if you aren’t near soap and water.

I would shoot for at least 70% mate, even better if its over 80%

I used 95% neutral 70-30 with vegetable glycerine. Where do you get the gum stuff? My mix is pretty thin/runny..

Not sure that I’d be using feints or heads due to methanol which is poisonous. My wife made some last week from hearts @ 92% and aloe Vera. Tried to keep the ethanol content well above 60%. Added a bit of tea tree oil as well. Quite runny but it works a treat.
