Which lead free solder is best?

Postby Rumblepants » Tue Sep 01, 2020 4:54 pm

Hi,

The green sheds all out of the 500gm lead free solder. What is the best diameter to get for 2 inch copper pipe.

I'm going to make a parrot as well so I'll be getting at least 250gms.

Thanks

AquaSafe100 500g roll is what I recommend, but if they are out then get some sticks of aquasafe100 in whatever diameter they have.
You can cut them up amd make the smaller as required.

There are others out there
Total tools stock the bromic equiv for a few $$ less
There are a heap of thinner ones around at specialist electronics places, they seem to max out at 1.2mm at the thickest, I have wanted a thinner solder often (used a hammer), but i think 1.2mm might be a fraction small, maybe 2mm would be a good compromise
Anyone seen it in that size in oz?

If using electrical solder be careful Most electrical solder is NOT lead free and most also has a core of flux inside it that is not safe to have contact with food and can introduce poisons in the what it comes in contact with food wise

A bit late to the party here, but plumbing stores sell copper brazing rods with silver in them. This is what I used for my Pelican.

DISCLAIMER: I know this because I work for a plumbing supplies store. Our stocks are 2%, 5% or 15% silver, though I think places like BOC stock up to 50% silver.

The sticks aren't super cheap at the high % end, but I ended up using only 3 sticks for the whole Pelican.

EDIT to add: This was all copper to copper joins... for the ferrules was some name-forgotten lead-free solder that a plumber left at my house one day.

The silver braze is good if you have enough heat to work it. If your doing a 2" you should be ok with a propane torch but map would be better, I cant say if you could get enough heat into a large 4" bit to use only a propane torch, lots more user skill needed me thinks or step up to oxy/acetylene for that - Stainless to copper is challenging with just the soft solder on the 4" with only propane
