ground botanicals in gin basket for carter head only

Postby howard » Wed Sep 23, 2020 11:41 am

searched but can't find the answer...............
how do you hold the ground botanicals in the gin basket effectively, so the vapour has a better chance of infusion.
this will be in a carter head, so please, only answers relating to these.
delivery is imminent, and i'm assuming the larger botanicals will be ok.
is there any ideas on packing the basket to ensure good infusion?
thinking of making small pouches for the ground botanicals out of small coffee filters.
or putting larger pieces in the bottom, a flat layer of coffee filter on top, with the ground above.

basically thinking that if i don't do something, the ground botanicals will gloop up and/or run out of the basket before having chance to infuse.

nb the carter will be after the RC and has a sight glass and valve on the bottom, so i'm not worried about stuff falling back into the boiler.

What kind of Carter Head have you got coming? Or is it just a basic Gin caddy ?

Hi Howard

Daiso ( and I assume other places) have large DIY tea bags ( I got 100 for $2.80). They fold over neatly like an envelope enclosing the spices inside. I have used these successfully for infusions so I assume they would work with a carter head/gin basket.

Cheers

very similar to this one.
4" with 2 x 2" side ports, 2 baskets, bottom drain.
it's just arrived about 10 mins ago.
the mesh in the baskets are very fine, but i still don't think they would stop ground botanicals running out

So it’s a gin caddy NOT a Carter head

Looks like a carter head to me. Granted it doesn't have a thumper tube.
In answer to the question, search ebay and you will find cheesecloth bags that you can use (that's what I use anyway). Wash them out an re-use, no probs.

Hard to see exactly with the tiny pic but it's offset like a carter head with a drain valve on it.

Would depend on the internals.

Give me a call whenever tomorrow, I am sitting in front of the still all day.
