Kegging spirit as pre mixed drinks.

Postby zwagerman9 » Wed Jun 27, 2012 5:34 pm

Heres a question that I wasnt sure where to place within the thread but here goes...
I am going to soon get into kegging my homebrew as I am sick of bottling, still need to get my set up but getting there slowly.
My question here is that is there any reason why this theory isnt possible.
X amount of spirit - whiskey etc (will need to figure out how much to how much etc)
to X amount of cola/coke/pepsimax
into a Corny keg and pressurised
See I mentally plan on adding x amount of spirit to the bottom of a sterile keg, and filling the rest up with pepsi-max, yes the pepsi will go flat as I poor into a 19litre corny keg, but I can re-pressurise with cO2 to carbonate then pressure to poor.

Any ideas?
Theories?
Premixed spirits on tap next to a few ales..... ?

If you were going to do that you maybe contact a local coke distributor and get hold of the coke syrup that they use for premix instead of using the coke with bubbles in it.

I keg bourbon and coke in a 5gallon spartenburg keg - its similer to a corny keg most parts are interchangable.
I plan on changing the plastic dip tubes for ss when I a am rich enuff.
I get the mix right in a measuring jug then scale up to keg size proportions.
it repressures with co2 no problem the corny keg system was designed for dispensing Pepsi so its all good.
my keg has traveled to pubcrawls, picnics, camping, fishing trips
there is no glass/ no rubbish/ its indestructable and one of my best buys ever

I do the same thing with various mixers in a 9L corny keg. Usually have 4 beers on tap and will do up the mixer baby corny keg if I'm having a party/bbq etc. I find that the lines can get a bit manky if you don't flush them straight afterwards (or run beer through them etc). Moreso than the beer kegs that is.

Same here jd have had a soda stream cola syrup sitting in top of my fridge for a long time! Haven't been able to get enough stock to waste some on an experiment. Might have to look at a 9L keg, would be easier than a 19

The process of kegging is slowly commencing. Slowly buying bits and bobs.
Figured carbonating id go with 2x 400g sodastream bottles as a cheaper option. Figured id get 3kegs carbed, and 6kegs pushed through. Initial costs are lower than buying my own co2. Was looking at dieman 540g co2 cylinders but at $70 sodastream is heaps cheaper. 2x60l soda stream bottles $49 at kmart.
Has anyone had any personal use of sodastream cola and sugar free cola? Using syrup would be cheap but if it tastes like shit I'm inclined to buy pepsi or simular, and also I have a theory in my head that even as the pepsi goes flat pooring into the keg, it would hold some residual carbonation, so less co2?

Cheers

If the pepsi was nice and cold and your poured it into the keg nice and slowly it would retain a lot of the carbonation.

For a gas bottle see if you can get your hands on an CO2 fire extinguisher (one of the newer types that has the right fitting to put a standard reg on)

There are places that will fill these with food grade CO2.

People say you need to remove the dip tube but I know people that just lay the bottle down.

A full bottle will last a long long time as well for fuck all cost if you can get an extinguisher for bugger all :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yeah I had looked around a heap at co2 fire extinguishers but still found price looking from $150 upwards, and I can get a kegking co2 for $200.
Unless you have better ideas where to look?

Depends where you are there are Country or Metro fire places that have second hand CO2 extinguishers.

Sometimes you can find out of date ones cheap as on Ebay etc, still cheaper to buy one and get tested than buy a new bottle.

Ebay has a few every now and then (which have probably been stolen, but hey plausible deniability is a wonderful thing) :))

How many KG are the kegking ones for 200?

2kg I think, I know I could get a 5kg for the same cost :P, Ive thought about using a fire extinguisher to force carb, and then soda stream to push the beer/spirit.
Im slowly keeping an eye on ebay.

I haven't done this myself, though i have done the odd keg of "Dark and Stormy"
Coke however has about twice the volume of CO2 as most beer styles, so everything else being equal you would probably need twice the pressure.

I used to do this years ago (probably early 0's)
I used to pour in the spirit (Whiskey), coke & water then carbonate the lot.
Only records I can find from those days is a small note on the quantities I used to use which were:
22L post mix keg - 3.5L 40% spirit, 9L water & 7L coke.
18L post mix keg - 3L 40% spirit, 8L water & 6L coke.
I have no recollection on how I worked out the alcohol contenet but I do have "Alc content = App 7.18%" written down.

I have a doc on "Keg Gassing - Forced Carbonation" which I followed to carbonate the lot.
I have scanned that doc to a .jpg & hope it's readable !

Anyone tried doing it without the co2? Regular bottling style?
Drop a bit of trubb, maybe ec1118 in with some sugar?

Just spitting in the breeze, thoughts?
