lighting torch to solder

Postby Merlot » Sun Sep 30, 2012 2:39 pm

G'day folks,
Just bought my torch and solder kit plus a few fittings to practice with and watched a couple of you tube vids. Think I'm good to go but I've just got one question in regards to lighting the torch. One vid said that it is dangerous to use a match or lighter and only a flint should be used. Is this right because I ain't got one?

Cheers

Should always use a flint lighter, that said, its not like your lighting 600 kpa of pressure!. I'd use a match over lighter if you have no other options. Just use your brain and dont light it toward you or anything else for that matter. i'll probably get ribbed for saaying that. Good luck.

A match would be safer than a lighter because its not a pressurised container of butane. (hand grenade)

Saying that, I use a lighter all the time with no worries. Just use a bit of care and common sense.

an oxy flint is the best, or if you have nothing else one of those long nosed lighters...DO NOT have the lighter, or matches in any of your pockets while soldering cause the lighter has enough explosive force to blow off a limb and matches give a nasty burn if your unlucky. They bang on about safety cause they know us gorillas do silly things as time goes on. Take care and all will be good. :teasing-tease:

I you have an empty lighter, cut the bottom off it, or drill a big hole through it

You now have a safe cheap flint.

I have one strung to the end of a tip cleaner pack.

Nice and neat job mate :handgestures-thumbupleft: , the secret to soldering is viewing the joint as being magnetic, heat either side of the join, be pacient, when you get the right heat happening the solder will just suck in to the join and form a perfect seal, if it doesnt, just move the heat around to the sus areas and the solder will follow. Another thing ive learnt is, if you get sus areas were the solder isnt playing ball, just give it a quick brush with flux and it will join the party :). Congrats to your first step of fun fun fun :))
