Liebig condenser

Postby Copperhead » Sun Mar 31, 2013 7:49 pm

Hi guys,
quick question for ya as I have always used reflux stills for vodka etc but am now interested in making rums etc. I have made a 2 inch pot still on a 15 gallon keg and I'm going to throw it over a open fire to save money on power and get more heat under it to do my stripping runs for rum etc. my question is I am making a Liebig with 1/2 inch with 3/4 inch over the top of it, how long should the 3/4 inch over the top be to knock down all the vapor without having any dramas. I was thinking at least 750mm for the 3/4 inch ???

Cheers copperhead.

Hi i would think if you were to through it on the open fire you will need bigger than 3/4 over 1/2 .you would want something like 1" over 3/4 or a shotgun. and a lot of water . :handgestures-thumbupleft:

What sort of heat you want to throw at it will determine the cooling required, an open fire is very variable and inconsistent unless you really know what you're doing.

In your situation I would be making the liebig as long as possible to get the output end well away from the fire, more so than for what you can get away with in condensing ability ;-)

Yep the water is no drama just don't want to make the 3/4 inch water jacket to short that's all. Macstill I was going to cut 1/3 of a 44 gallon drum and set up the still in that to contain the fire.

I would want my output at least 1 meter from any open flame, even more if you got the room ;-)
