Lowans yeast not working

Postby Colin Smith » Thu Apr 11, 2013 8:37 am

I made 5 + 15 litre Tomato paste washes last night , being the first time making a TPW the first out the 5 washes I made I pitched the yeast at 32 degrees.. The other 4 I pitched at 28 degrees .. The 32 degree wash was bubbling away after 1 hour but the other 4 at 28 degrees are not bubbling yet and it's been over 12 hours... I used lowans yeast and put it straight in.. Did not activate first.. What should I do now.. ? Can I scrap the yeast off the top put it with some warm water and repitch it.. Or will it come good .. Hope my washes aren't fucked..

Yeah, I agree with the gummibear ( :)) ).

I've never activated Lowan's yeast before pitching and it always fires away.

Were the fermenters cleaned out the same way etc?

Interesting mate. If it doesn't fire off after a stir, a bit more yeast won't hurt it. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I sometimes have my washes stall because of what I believe to be insufficient aeration.
When this happens I pouring it vigorously out into another bucket, then back into the fermenter and add some extra yeast. Always fires off after that.

I use a paint stirrer on a cordless drill to aerate all my wash's while stirring the yeast in, think I paid about $12 at Bunnings for it :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I've never had one stall, I've used yeast that's been in the shed for a couple of months, very rarely clean the fermenter, don't have heating, I'm with Sam, it's prolly be going soon.

Glad im not the only one haha, never seen the need to unless back in the turbo days..seemed to grow a bit of mould..but TPW never grows any..go figure, every few washes I grab some detergent then sanitize lol. as for airating the wash..I just set it on top myself with no stiring.ALWAYS picks up an hour or so later. the batch's I put on today took about an hour..but threw some vitamin B in with this one..and its bubbling faster than ever..hmm

i always use lowans yeast- that is kept in the freezer
i am lead to believe that is is best to soak the yeast in water to begin with. this helps plump up the cell wall before it goes into the sugar water. and that is better cos of osmolarity and science and shit (Mac probably will describe it better)

before that i would just chuck it in and give it a shake. never had a problem with doing that (but the soaking seems to start it off quicker).
being in Australia most of us will have some sort of water saving tap head (if not get one), they restrict water flow and add air into the stream (so it seems like the same amount of water is coming out, but only 50% of the water is). that should aerate the wash enough

Doesn't get more simple then that

My garden hose aerates pretty well too! :))

Damn sight better than the shit coming out of the tap..
