GLOSSARY OF TERMS - Got an addition?

PostPosted: Sun Jun 12, 2011 11:12 am

This thread is for all of those just starting out that aren't too familiar with all the different terms and names used in the distilling world. For a long time I had no idea what a dephlegmator did or where a liebig fitted into the scheme of things.

Anyone can post new definitions in here as they become relevant.

If you do not agree with a definition that somebody has posted or have something to add to it, PM them and allow them to research and edit. This serves two purposes, it allows them to seek the knowledge which is of great benefit and no fights will start about peoples posts being edited by others.

Cheers, Heffers

Not a bad idea, Redbeard.

On a normal reflux column, there's not much point except that it might look cool. On a bubbler, the SG's let you see what is happening on each plate, which will let you see if the still is running as it should :handgestures-thumbupleft:

It's not just up to us mods to fill the glossary in, fellas... If you see a term or whatever that isn't in there, let us know here WITH the definition, and we'll edit it into the original glossary :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Sorry Zak, I understand the purpose of a thumper, however I don't think I could accurately define it. Still a n00b :teasing-tease:

INVERTED SUGAR:

Inverted or invert sugar is a mixture of glucose and fructose; it is obtained by splitting sucrose into these two components. We do this by mixing our sugar with citric acid (either bought as such, or from lemons)

PC

Is a Packed Column, and can be packed with various types of media, to assist with reflux.

(I think this is a pretty accurate description, but I might have missed something?)

Or is it a product condenser?

PC is generally Product Condenser :handgestures-thumbupleft:

We usually say Packed Section instead of Packed Column
