I have only ever seen one person use that abbreviation.

It would make more sense to use the chemical symbol :-B

I'm easy, just couldn't identify them from the glossary and, as mainly us newbies use it, I suggested it... Either would work but not everyone will know its chemical formulae either... Just a thought.

Racking - (syphoning the wash from the top down) from you're fermenter to the boiler leaving the grain and yeast cake in the bottom of fermenter.

Found this by accident and it has had me confused for a while. Thx to Heath71 for helping me 'get it!'

Hmmm, I've heard it a lot in our forum, "just rack it off " but if it's not a correct term for distilling it shouldn't be included.
However, that is how languages evolve so maybe it should.

How's that for sitting on the fence 8-} :laughing-rolling:

I suppose for it to be more distilling related we should be using "decant".
But because our containers are a bit on the larger side siphons are used instead of direct pouring.

siphoning is where we get the liquid out of our fermenters

but when someone says racking isnt that a way of saying siphon and leave all the yeast and grains behind

Racking is a beer term to get the beer off the initial yeast cake and can be beneficial for lagering and bulk priming and also results in clearer beer.

It's not a distilling term.

Interesting debate this .... So what would be the equivalent distilling term for syphoning the wash off of the yeast/grain? I do this every single batch and it's an important stage in the process for continuing generations so it seems there should be a place in the glossary for it whether we call it racking or something else.

X2 really I can't see the problem with adding it to the list, the beer people will know what it is anyway, and isn't the "glossary of Terms" aimed at newbies or is there a bit of "snobbery " entering the argument here

ps the term "racking off" is actually used more in wine making than beer brewing

So are you blokes saying that "siphoning off the grain" isn't good enough? And that racking should be the preferred term?

Either way I really don't really mind ;-)

Well the glossary is aimed at newbies (me :-D ) and I don't think many newbies are using grain, certainly not at the start, Sam :romance-kisscheek:

You can also call it transferring or charging the boiler from fermenter as well........
