There another one for newbies "Charging"!

Keep in mind, as newbies we don't know ... 'mud' from clay about distilling!! All these terms that you 'old' hands are used to, and know their origin for, confuse the crap out of us. Especially the terms that are interchangeable!

I thought the Glossary was for us, uneducated types?!?!?

I will make some additions when I have access to my computer again unless one of the mods want to do it.

My original concern was that racking is a specific brewing term and what we do as distillers isn't the same so if it goes in the glossary that needs to be stated.

Ive read people say charging the boiler with low wines.

where do people come up with these terms :laughing-rolling:

I would say fill the boiler with low wines. charging to me relates to power

Maybe things get made up over time. like yous for you all :angry-banghead:

Most if not all of the terminologies used in distilling go back many many years and are used for a reason. Things such as the "Angels Share" for instance are not something that someone made up yesterday.
The word "Charge" can mean many things including " load or fill (a container, gun, etc.) to the full or proper extent.
synonyms: fill, fill up, fill to the brim, top up, stock; load, load up, pack, plug, arm, prepare to fire
"please see to it that your glasses are charged".
If you care to look back through some of the early Distilling literature that is available you will find the word used many times long before Forums existed.

Thx SBB.

For me, I find the terminology confusing, even between different washes!
In whisky, what's left in the boiler is called a 'backset'. When you make Rum it's called 'dunder' ...
So, when starting out its hell confusing! This glossary can be a source of understanding and if you guys then add a the historical info, that would just be a bonus to the likes of me!

A few posts back someone illustrated with the phrase "charging a thumper".........this showed a term missing from the glossary......."THUMPER".

I'v been attempting to figure out what exactly a thumper is and how they relate to various still configurations, so, (as you do), I looked in the Glossary but there's nothing there.

Hoping someone can shed some light.
