First TPW run

Postby baldoss » Fri May 31, 2013 2:54 pm

Alright Im currently in progress with my first TPW run (first ever run after my sacrificial and cleaning runs).

Boiler charge: 40L
Specific gravity of wash: 0.9 flat

So far I'm a little over two and a half hours in and am getting initial fores drops very slowly. Two ring burner is pretty slow to heat up 40L but it'll get there. Having a half hour interruption because we found out the next door neighbor is actually a cop (!) so we had to move everything didn't help things.

I am wondering whether to run this as a stripping run and just collect low wines? I have another 40L of tpw to run and another 25L of pinto shine molasses that I think I will run next to hopefully have something drinkable tonight (I should really air it through). Not even really sure what the end product of TPW through a pot still is going to taste like?

Get on board because I'll be doing live updates!

Getting some pretty strong huffing - backed the coolant flow off to as low as I think it will go. Aiming for that match stick sized trickle

Nice mate, pretty exciting getting the first run out. Even more impressive because the only equipment you have is: "nothing... yet!"

i would back the heat off, increase the coolant flow, then slowly turn the heat up to your happy with output and minimal huffing...

Still huffing like a trooper, distillate is coming out real cold. Have the coolant flow as low as I can get it, still feels cold near the outtake. Have to wait and hope it sorts itself out!

I thought huffing was having too much cooling going as the vapor is hitting a really cold condenser and collapsing? Didn't think backing the heat off would do anything. Backed it off anyway to see what it does

as long as no vapours are coming out, now is the time to work out how to drive it...play a little. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

with in reason...remember vapour escaping = big bang if your unlucky.

Not sure how long I need to wait between temp adjustments. Killed the heat completely and the output stopped in probably 20 seconds. Put the outer ring on and started huffing almost straight away. Running just the inner ring now on as low as it will go without turning off and still huffing.

you might have to put some loose S/S scrubbers up the output pipe. It's hard to say with out being there, how high did you fill your keg?

Hmm I'll keep fiddling with the heat to see if I can do it that way, otherwise might give the scrubbers a go, thanks.

Boiler is 50L, filled it with about 40L of

Shoved a bit of steel wool up there, maxed the heat and the cooling, slowly backing off the cooling little by little to see how it goes. Getting intermittent streams and then back to huffing

Pulled it out and marked the jars I was collecting in while it was in there - I thought they were the same thing?

About as close as I'll get to a stream now, no huffing, no scrubbers :)

good, seems like you rode out the storm, it will get easier the more runs you do...just remember when using gas to heat it all up...as soon as it leaks, or vapour starts coming out...turn the gas off straight away and sort out the problem. I use gas and I'm alway in reaching distance to turn it off a a blink of an eye if some thing goes wrong.

Our neighbour was a cop...now they've moved out and the new neighbour has his own still setup! Don't think I'll have any problems with them...he was happy to tell me all about his setup within 5 mins of meeting the new neighbour...I just played dumb :silent:
