My first wash input please

Postby newbiboozer » Tue Jun 04, 2013 8:09 pm

I put down a still spirits classic yeast with 6 kg of sugar plus turbo carbon as hbs told me to(before I found this site) anyway it bubbled away fine for first 3 days then slowed up. The problem is the final SG has stayed steady on 990 for 3 days. I have read it should come down to 980. The alcohol % of the wash is around 11%. Should I just run it through the still or what. It has been cool up here but the temp of the wash has stayed around 22 to 25 c.

Surprised they didn't tell you to add the turbo clear after to get the carbon out of the wash before running it :puke-huge: :laughing-rolling:

I hope your next wash isn't going to be a turbo and you do your cuts right ;-)

As other's have said, 990 is more than GTG (good to go)...there shouldn't be any sugars left in there, and when it stops bubbling is a good sign the yeast have knocked off :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Mate 990 and you're on. Run that. If you're really aiming for higher abv you'll need to heat the wash and add some year nutrient or a bit if bicarbonate soda to ramp it up.

Now you've found us Just make sure your next run is a TPW eh? :-)

Is the second one using tomato paste? If its just sugar and yeast them you're really going to struggle to get it up to a decent abv.

Hi ozy,

I think you should pop on over to the Newbie section and the tried and proven thread section. There is an abundance of information that will help get you going on the right path.

My understanding is when you put a turbo wash on the yeast packet is full of additives and "nutrients" aimed at obtaining a high ABV wash. This in turn gives off flavours and smells, making an average product

You will need to add something to the water & sugar wash. This will give the yeast some nutrients so it can turn the sugar into alcohol. The Tomato Paste Wash (TPW) is highly recommended for guys coming off turbos and used by many seasoned stillers. It is regarded as a simple and high quality wash.

Good luck.
