Hi ozy,
I think you should pop on over to the Newbie section and the tried and proven thread section. There is an abundance of information that will help get you going on the right path.
My understanding is when you put a turbo wash on the yeast packet is full of additives and "nutrients" aimed at obtaining a high ABV wash. This in turn gives off flavours and smells, making an average product
You will need to add something to the water & sugar wash. This will give the yeast some nutrients so it can turn the sugar into alcohol. The Tomato Paste Wash (TPW) is highly recommended for guys coming off turbos and used by many seasoned stillers. It is regarded as a simple and high quality wash.
Good luck.
