We have the technology, we can rebuild him.

Hello again,
So i have decided to have a crack at modifying my older style still. I have purchased an old Oxy Acetylene kit so will be cooking with gas.. My silver soldering is very rusty so i may end up with a pile of scrap copper but half the fun is in the chase isn't it?

here is a photo of my mods hoping to make a LM/VM hybrid.

Figured this way i can work on the top mod and if i decide i have bitten off more than i can chew i can always stick with running it as a pot still..

So what do you think? Positive and negative feedback appreciated!!

Cheers

Looks pretty good, few comments:
- Switch coolant direction (counter-current to vapour flow)
- Consider just taking off the needle valve directly (you'll mainly use this for foreshots and heads, and it'd be better to not contaminate your condenser, not a huge issue though)
- Make sure it's open to atmo above the coil
- You will probably want an extension at some point, it's a bit short to get azeo at the moment I recon
- Check to make sure your adjustable takeoff point is stainless (looks a bit like chromed something to me, don't know how good that is for you).

Sorry, bit of jargon, it's short for azeotrope. An azeotrope is the point at which vapour evaporated from a liquid has the same composition as the liquid itself. The azeotrope between water and ethanol at atmospheric pressure is at about 96% abv. This means that in a reflux column, at the point where the liquid gets to 96%, the vapour coming off is also at 96%. As stills rely on the difference between vapour and liquid composition, once you reach the azeotrope you can't get it any more pure (without molecular sieves or a vacuum still).

Basically, getting to azeotrope is getting as pure ethanol as you can.
