Just starting out and need some advise? then post it in here.

40% APV On Fire...

I tryed setting on fire 40 % APV neutral sprit made from a TPW using a T500 .. Just thought it would light up.. It lights up at 94 APV but not 40... :think:

Hence the recommendation that nothing over 40% ABV is put into your still boiler ;-) It's generally regarded as a safe percentage to apply heat to :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I reckon the idea is that 100 proof will burn ie 50%

That's what I thought ,, how come sambuca lights up at 40% APV ... Don't understand.. Also I tryed using my foreshots in my zippo it lights up on its own but not in the zippo... :wtf:

Anything over 50% will light to a naked flame. The idea is there is more alcohol than water content. That is where the 100 proof scale comes in. I can't comment on the Sambuca, I've never tried. But in theory if its less than 50% it shouldn't.

I've tried 40% saturated on wood and eventually it did light. I'm guessing this is because it got hot enough and it had a "wick" for the fuel to light on.

If you half fill a shot glass with 40% and roll the glass around to coat the inside, you will fing that it will light up.
Not sure why, I assume its coz there is less volume on the sides and the alc warms up allowing it to ignite :-B

There are different ratings, flash point, ignition point, etc, remembering reading a good write up by someone here but carnt be fucked finding it right now :handgestures-thumbupleft:
