I think I remember reading that there can be issues with the minimal surface area on 2" plates.

I cant edit,(which is a pain in the arse) so maybe I need to re phase what I really meant, For the time invoked, building one of these things, for the few bob extra that you will pay to go 3 or 4 inch, for what you will save in time once distilling, and for the hassles of trying to drill 2 inch plates , then stuff those two inch perf plates down a two inch column, well fuck , i just dont wanna about it !

Honestly for the extra cost of the fittings that really is SFA in the scheme of things, you could have a brilliant little 3" bubbler you built yourself that could last a lifetime without ever "needing" to upgrade :handgestures-thumbupleft:

You would use up quite a bit of that on a 4" column that reduced to 2" after the RC ;-)

Just finished my 2 inch bubbler. It's slow but I only have a small boiler and only want a small amount of product. Don't bother making one if you want large quantities otherwise you'd be sitting at it for hours waiting for it to get through a 50 L wash. I haven't had a problem with off flavours but I don't run mine fast, I only use between about 1000 to 900 watts through my stove. Heaps better than my old 3/4 inch pot still but did take a lot of effort to make. It's not for everyone (I may well be on my own here) so if you want bigger quantities and plan on making a bubbler than for the effort of making a 2 inch, you may as well make it in 3 inch. I did however make mine quite cheaply because it was only 2 inch.

Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.
