Double reflux distilling and foreshots

Postby bcg1976 » Wed Jul 03, 2013 1:09 pm

Hopefully my last question related to rerunning two runs sitting in a demijohn that have less hearts in them than they should.

So I've reflux distilled some TPW once and after chucking 200ml of fores, have pretty much kept and mixed in the rest between 78degC and 81.9degC.

Question 1:

So, emptying the bottles and re-mixing to under 40% ABV and re-running in the reflux again, how much foreshots should I expect to toss out?

Question 2:

I read elsewhere here that adding a spoon of bi-carb per litre is a good idea on a second sprit run? Anyone care to comment on any other pre-processing of this wash that's worth doing?

Thanks again.

Hi Mate, The simple reply would be just trust your senses.
Still do your cuts, let it air and smell/ taste the next day.
I used to use Bi Carb when I was potstillin, I dont bother any more tho(I run a bubbler)
Its one of those things, some people do it, some dont.........Its up to you ;-)

It's supposed to compress the heads giving you a wider hearts cut.

I tried it a couple of times and i'm still not sure if it made a difference :?
