How long can I leave a wash in the boiler?

Postby Sam. » Sun Jul 14, 2013 7:55 am

Howdy all, I thought I would put this here as it seemed the most appropriate place.

We all know that a wash will last months in a fermenter that is sealed.

The question is, once your boiler is charged with say a BWKO, or any grain based wash, has anyone had the wash go off or sour or anything to that effect before having the chance to run it?

I have never been in this situation before but I will be transporting a wash in my boiler and not sure when I will get to run it.

Let's hear your experiences :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I've started a run and had to shutdown prior to any takeoff.

I ran it again a week later and it tasted fine a month later when i was drinking it :handgestures-thumbupleft:

What is the difference between a boiler and a fermenter?
If it is sealed there shouldn't be a problem, should there?
It'd be just like racking it off to settle.

Maybe just seal it up and see what happens.
I've been waiting to finish this build of mine and have a stainless open top fermenter with a wash in it.
Been sitting about six weeks and hasn't gone off yet.... and I'm in the tropics.

Yep seal it well, alfoil or same .

I left one in warmer weather for 2 weeks unsealed...forgot the sod, and it was growing a whole new culture.

one of my plum washes was in a large bucket covered in glad wrap for 3 months, surface looked iffy but the wash was fine :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Ok, i'm not talking about a fermenter.

I am talking about putting it into your boiler, sealing that with blanking caps, chucking it in the back of the car, driving 150k with it shaking everywhere then letting it sit for a few weeks.

Anyone done anything similar to this?

Or even charged their boiler then left it for ages in that?

Any ill affects?

With a cleared wash you'd have no dramas, but if it was a bit cloudy and settled I'd be a bit concerned about firing it up without stirring it.

My BKO wash gets run a little cloudy with no dramas, but that's how I prefer to run it.
