Which still or stills?

Postby Crusty » Sun Jul 14, 2013 9:30 am

Hi guys.
A total noob to distilling really but after some advice. I quite like rum, bourbon, whiskey etc & assume a pot still would be best for this. Happy to be corrected of course. The wife loves vodka, malibu & flavoured spirits. I used to own a T500 but wasnt totally happy with it. Which still should I be looking at, pot, dash 2 etc. I am not concerned with price but would like to spend only once for the right gear. If you guys had the coin, what would you be looking to purchase for neutral spirits or rums, whiskey etc.
Will one still do both or not really? Make & model would be helpful so I can focus on the correct still or stills.
I know this is a fairly broad question but need some guidance in the right direction.
Cheers

Welcome to the forum... :handgestures-thumbupleft: In my opinion if cost is no barrier a bubbler correctly set up will give you all the flexability you will ever need making great rums, whiskies and neutrals. Have a good read through our forums and you will be able to make an informed decission on which way to go.

I see you've been a member for around 7 or 8 months, but I dont think you'll find much info here about a Dash 2... well nothing positive anyway :teasing-neener:

There are much better quality stills available like this one that can be found here

Its a great idea being modular. Adding extra plates to the column.
What are the benefits of the extra plates say going from 4 to 6 or even 8.

More plates equals higher purity at the expense of flavour ;-)

The more plates the less flavour carry over,if you want neutral,4-5 plates with a packed section and you can't go wrong :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:
If you only want to spend your money once,a FSD-6-5 would be my first choice, the service and after sales back up are second to none, quality is guaranteed, unlike others out there, the speed that these things run at is astounding.Match this with a 100-150l FSD boiler, soon to arrive on our shores, and you've got all bases covered :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

You can't go wrong with a plated column and the Fsd columns are very well put together.

It my be a silly qurstion but I'll ask it any way.
If I purchased a fsd 4 & wanted to make rums, scotch, whiskey etc, will running it with less bubblers ie 3, will I get the same results doing this as buying a pot still specifically designed for that specific purpose. Kind of like buying a claytons 4 wheel drive, ok for on or off road but not perfect for either. If a pot still will give me better results without compromise, I'd prefer to do that & continue saving for the fsd 4 just for neutrals. Or will the fsd 4 be perfect for both whiskeys & neutrals?
Im a deer with no eyes ( no idea )
cheers

If you want an analogy a pot still is a hyundai excel and the FSD 4 is a Landcruiser.

You could run the FSD with 3 plates and still shit on a pot still.

It's like comparing bananas and boomerangs.

A bubbler is the best of both worlds between a pot and dedicated reflux :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Howdy,

Just a question for mac & 5SD owners, would you recommend a rock filtering section on top of plates for a quality neutral - Vodka

To address Crusty's other drink pref mentioned here.

Yes. I did the cuts on my nuetrel run last night and it is as good if not better than anything I have made with my LM/VM combo.
