transferring dunder back to fermenter.

Postby newbiboozer » Fri Aug 16, 2013 11:40 am

I'm building a boiler from a 50 l keg and will put a tap right at the bottom and possibly one 4" or so up off the bottom but this will still be very low to the ground and will need a short bucket to transfer the dunder back to my fermenter. Just wondered if anyone has any ideas.

That's something I was only thinking about this morning too.Weird ...anyway I was thinking fountain pump. But obviously you'd need to wash out the lines and pump afterwards .These can pump up to several meters head .Saw a YouTube recently where a guy had made a paristeltic pump for pumping his beer into his keg

I was reading on another forum about I think it was called kaixin pumps. They use them to circulate hot wort while brewing. Wonder if something like this would work for our purposes

I guess I could I might bung some wheels under it. just wanted to keep it low as possible. Is that how you all do it just a bucket under the tap at the bottom.

My method involves welding gloves and a careful pour. Bit like in a gold room with a molten crucible in front of you. Don't spill any for christ sake.
Really just curious about yr bubbler newby. All back together?

I originally put a 1" drain in the side of my boiler so it could sit flat on the ground, but it gave me the shits having to tip the boiler over to properly empty it. So I put a 1/2 drain in the bottom, that way I did no have to raise the boiler much to clear the bottom drain, but it would easily drain fully. Now I wish I had put the side drain higher so I could fit a 20L bucket under it. If I had my time again, I would put a drain just below the bottom rib as well as one in the bottom, then have the boiler on legs high enough to get a bucket under the side drain. Best of both worlds. Hope that helps. Oh and I drain mine into a smaller bucket and tip that into a 20L one to cool/store.

The higher you put it and once you start getting into reflux stills and bubblers is when height becomes an issue so some people may not want raise it that high. I know i've got mine rasied 300mm and with my bubbler sitting on top it squeezes under my patio just

just lots of things to think about :D

I transfer all my stuff with this little 240 volt pump
In to boiler
Out of boiler to drain or in the case of rum back to fermenter
just a little pump I got from the tip shop for $10.00

That's the go aussie. I assume the hot backset/dunder does not worry it.

You don't want to put hot dunder back into the fermenter if you're reusing the yeast cake and letting it cool also helps with the clearing .All the heavy shit sinks to the bottom.
