Should I use finings? Sugar wash/ tomato paste

Postby No eye deer » Fri Aug 23, 2013 12:45 pm

Hey fellas,
My sugar /TP wash is ready to distill. Its been sitting (after fermenting) for about 3 weeks. ABV is 10%. Its still a bit murky. Orangey colour. Very little stuff floating on top of 23 lt wash.
Now-should I use finings/ glycerin?
Or- do you reckon it'll still OK?
OH! 5 litre reflux still.
Thanks fellas

No. I have never added anything to clear a TPW. Patience and some cold weather will do it nicely. You could rack it off leaving behind about 2 cms of the wash to avoid getting any extra yeast cake in there and let it sit for another week. Even more yeast will drop out and it will be the colour of week fanta by then and pretty clear.

But don't worry about finings or gelly.

I would have run it a week ago, but that's just how I do it :) Some guys let it sit for a month to settle. Hardly anyone uses finings, the beauty of TPW is that it needs hardly any special treatment.

She should be good to go.

Using finings won't do any harm but like said not really necessary if you can wait a few days :handgestures-thumbupleft:

By the sounds of it yours is as clear as you need it. Now get stillin :music-deathmetal:

When I first got started I used the HBS turbo clear stuff a couple of times, worked very well but cost a lot of money for what it is.
I sometimes still use bentonite which I buy in bulk. It works well and takes a couple days to finish it's job.
Most guys around here seem to just give it time to settle.

I you have a 5 litre reflux still. get a heap of clean smaller containers like 2l drink bottles or 3 l fruit juice and siphon into these that will free up fermenter for a new batch .With the smaller containers it is possible to pour cleared wash and leave sediment in the bottom .
