how much propane??

Postby bourboncask » Thu Aug 29, 2013 9:34 pm

Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone on here can give me some sort of idea of how much propane I'd need to do a 10 gal (37.5 L)stripping run? I've looked all over the newbie section and can't see anything regarding this question. I'd hate to run out half way threw.... I know it's going to be different for every still. I currently have a 30 lb (13 K) propane tank. Wondering if it's going to be enough to run a pot still for 5-7 hours.

Thanks

i get about 3-4 strip runs at 1.5 hours each in a 50ltr keg and 3 burner and one spirit run inc unless i run the strip runs real hard then i may refill but its not because my bottle is empty its because the HP reg don't like running when its getting low in gas it starves

Hello bourbon,
13kg well...plenty

from a 9kg bottle on 3 ring burner with a boiler heat shroud I get 5+ spirit runs. Burner normally only needs 1 - 1.5 rings.

For some reason I thought a stripping run would take longer. Figured 4-6 hours a strip run, 8-10 hours a spirit run for a 10 gal batch

Depends on many factors
Burner type
Regulator type
Still type
Personal preference
How far into your tails you go

If you don't mind spending the money Try burning off a bottle of gas See how long it takes... But you may as well put some wash over it and get a return. :-D
You will do several runs easily on a 13 kg
I have 3 ring burner and get 4 or 5 25 ltr wash runs out of 9 kg plus some bar B use plus a weekend camping.
I have a 4.5 kg as a back up just in case the 9 ner dies mid run.
Having said that. It has never happened to me.
