This one is for filling bottles. Just enter the size of bottle (ie 700), the required ABV (ie 40%)and the original ABV (ie 93%)

I used the sugar wash calculator to work out the potential ABV of several ginger beer recipes.
One on the ABC local radio site for a family ginger beer says 4 cups sugar plus 24 cups water ( plus ginger beer plant)
I converted that to metric and got 900g sugar and 6 litres water
I put that into the wash calculator and it came up with 8.8% ABV -that is not a kiddies drink

What is wrong?
Have I stuffed my maths? Is the calculator wrong? Did I use it incorrectly? Does some of the sugar not turn to alcohol with ginger beer?

I can't calulate the ABV of a wash that consists of 2.5L @ 90% abv plus 22.5L @ 10% abv

I wanna check its not over 40%,,,,,,as I found its a real c@#t having to take some back outta the boiler when its over 40% :angry-banghead:

I will try to do the rough maths way and post, or check out how these calculators work, but here is the answer in the meantime in case you need the answer in a hurry

2.5 litres of 90% abv plus 22.5 litres of 10% gives 24.8 litres of 18.1%

Calculated using AlcoDens then rounding answers slightly

If you go to the bottom of the second page of this thread you will find

open it and go down to the second lot of calccs and enter your numbers and it will come up with 18% which is not completly accurate but it is good enough for what you want.

In case you would rather the maths way

2.5 litres of 90% contains 2.5 X 90 / 100 = 2.25 litres of pure alcohol
22.5 litres of 10% contains 22.5 X 10 / 100 = 2.25 litres pure alcohol

We now have 4.5 litres of pure alcohol in 2.25 + 22.5 = 25 litres total (actually slightly less because the total volume usually shrinks when adding alcohol to water

4.5 / 25 X 100 = 18%

Hi all,

doing my first batch , and am inquiring how to calculate amount of water needed to add to the spirit to bring it to 40%. have tried to download calculator but my system wont allow me to download win zip, I know there is a easy way out there some where

Hey mate, grab a calculator and do this:

Litres of uncut spirit * Current %abv (e.g. 90) /40

That's your new volume at 40%. To work out the amount of water you need to add:

Value you just worked out - Litres of uncut spirit.
