Downcomers how long

I guess the title says it all so how close should my cups on my DCs come to the perferated plate and does it matter how much of the tube is in the cup.

30mm or so below the plate is enough.

As long as you have enough tube in the cup to create a good vapour lock you are all good. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hello,

take care with bottom plate downcomer to prevent blow past. I found depth is needed so the cup is deeper say around 20mm whereas the rest would be 8 - 10mm.

DC's would be 40mm, 30mm below plate ...longer having less chance of blow past but pain to drain/clean.

When you say 8-10mm and 20mm is that the cup depth or the amount of tube in liquid.

cup length,

I'd be looking to have the top ones downcomer outlet at least 5mm below the rim of the cup. Deeper for the bottom plate at least 1cm.

with the glass still the issue which serves as a bonus you can see is, surface tension extends up the side of the downcomer effectively extending cup bath depth by about 2 -3 mm....negated however if cups are way over sized but works well on next size up ie 3/4" wide downcomer 1 inch wide cap.

hope that helps

Thanks very much BT1. I Am using 3/4 to 1/2 reducers and 1/2 " tubes. I had planned to use 1" cups. would you recommend 3/4" cups. Or should I go just 3/4" tubes with the 1" cups.

realistically all you need to get is a fluid lock to prevent blow past.

I don't see any value in having larger volume cups than you need so 3/4" cups on 1/2" tube would be fine imho...it achieves exactly what's needed!

Upside is it frees up more spirit to move around the beast = reduced static/dead load.

ps rather than buying cups if you have some flat off cuts you can silder solder to slices of 3/4" cut to length to make your own...touch up on a grinder/flat file and your done.
