Water drum fermenter

Postby FireKitty » Tue Oct 22, 2013 9:27 am

Does anybody use these for fermenting?
http://www.bunnings.com.au/25l-wide-mouth-water-drum_p3241479

My questions for it would be:
Is the o-ring adequate for sealing against bacteria, and
Would the level of the hole for tap be enough to sit above the slurry at bottom of fermenter once completed and settled?

Cheers :)

Yep, o-ring is air tight :handgestures-thumbupleft: Not sure about the tap as I siphon my wash out.

Yep, they're a great little fermenter, the tap is fine if your doing a TPW, if your fermenting with grain, you will need to siphon or pour out the wash :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yeh their the beasts i use for beer fermenters...

grain/sugar head may be an issue for the tap depth...siphon or tap cage works.

Do grains leave a big plug on the bottom do they? Hmmmm...... Must find pictures of this so I know what I'll be in for eventually :-B

Not so much a "plug" more like all the grain settles to the bottom and the nice clear wash sits on top.
Its just easier to leave all that crap in the bottom and just take the good stuff on top.

I use these for beer.
You can pull the o'ring out put some gladwrap over the top and use the o'ring to secure it.
Fling the lid. (if you want)

Nice idea tipsy I brought 2 of these. the cheap lid is easy to over tighten and you lose the air lock trying to get it air tight. They are getting better at sealing with use but this trick would be easier I reckon.

Yes yes and not if your fermenting on the grain after it has settled. Just siphon your wash out when its finished.

On the All Grain beer brewing forum I frequent, we use them for fermenting out wort. As above, most of us remove the lid and use gladwrap and the o-ring to hold it in place.

There is also a square version which is 5L bigger.
