Help!!! we put a brew on to cook today and the temp will not go below 79.5

Have we overfilled the boiler?

Not left to clear long enough?

Need new steel in column?

Thanks for all ideas

Thank you.

I think we have overfilled the still as we have been experimenting making 30lt tomato wash to get more volume.

Is there any other wash we can try?

would 8kg of sugar and 350 tomato paste make more volume as out of 25lt we dont seem to get the volume other people say they get.

Help we have just started a cook and the spirit maker stil will not drop below 79.2

What could be the problem

This is getting kind of repetitive...we are nice people and happy to answer questions, but the problem could be that between having the same 'problem' each time, you don't read a few things on here and learn anything. Then when you have the exact same issue, you don't have the simple knowledge on whether or not there is a problem or what to do about it...

And previously, you have asked an identical question and then not logged in for several weeks, so you're obviously not waiting for an answer...

Good luck with your next run :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Doesn't matter what still you have, you can't control the boiling point of the wash...

We don't know if you have overfilled the boiler, because we don't know how big the boiler is, or how much wash you put in. Having said that, the level of your boiler won't change the temps...

We don't know how long you let the wash clear... This also won't make any difference.

You shouldn't have any (non-stainless) steel in your still anywhere, I have no idea what this bit means.

What type of wash are you using? I'm assuming TPW... It doesn't matter if you are making 20L washes or 200L washes, if you can only fit 20L in your boiler, that's what you're going to be able to run...

Most of us are running 50L boilers, which is probably why it looks like we are getting more product.

I will reiterate.

You cannot control the temperature that a wash will boil at.

Boiler is a 25lt Home Spirit Maker

Quotes on website

93% alcohol and 97% yield

Fast — Makes 13 bottles in about 4 hours.

Pure — Delivers great tasting 93% alcohol with smooth flavour.

We use TPW left to clear for three weeks still always looks bit cloudy....
This still uses SS packing supposedly never needs replacing.
we got 2.3lt today all split into jars.

Thank you for all the comments

So you got 2.3L of 93% spirit out of ~20L of -10% wash? Sounds about right...

You should be collecting in 200-300ml jars. After letting it sit for 24-48 hours, make your cuts. Start at the middle, and using your nose and taste work out what is good and what is bad. Turf the bad stuff and keep the good.

Using the stats 93% alcohol and 97% yield
Say you have a 22L wash in the 25L boiler. (I back calculated 22L wash vol based on your output)
22L wash at say 10% alv = 2.2L pure alcohol in the wash
2.2L pure alc at 97% yield = 2.134L pure alc output.
2.134 / 93% alc = 2.29L alc product.
That looks good.

As mentioned above, you need to use cuts. Zak has described that, and there is plenty of detailed info on here if you want to read up more. The reason your product is milky is tails are mixed in the main product. You will probably find it even feels a bit oily on your pallet. The heads and tails can be kept and re-run as low-wines to extract the alcohol from later.

got 2.3 lt of 87.8% from 25lt wash finished product not milky I was saying the TPW was not altogether clear.

all good I have done some reading.

Just wondered if more sugar would make stronger alcohol.

The wash itself doesn't need to be clear.

More sugar does = more final alcohol. But push the wash over 10% and you will stress your yeast and end up with an inferior product.

It will, but that doesn't mean it is of any quality.

Technically, you can push the alcohol potential as far as the yeast can tolerate...but that doesn't mean it will make a good product. It's the fuel industry that would push these things to their limits...not the beverage production industry...

MacStill wrote:Here's my version for a 25L wash.

5kg sugar
80grams bakers yeast
1/4 tea spoon citric acid
200 grams leggo's tomato paste.

Mix sugar, tomato paste, citric acid and 10 liters hot water into your fermenter to disolve all the sugar.

Top up with cool water and hopefully you've got it at about 30c

Pitch yeast.
This wash will clear on it's own to a pale pink colour, there is no need to for any sort of filtering.
therefore, there is no home brew shop additives or agents required.
Happy stillin' Folks

Cheers.

on another note we are using a 200lt tank and recycling the water.

She gets pretty warm after a couple of hours.

Will it be better on the tap?
