What size fermenter?

Postby pochine » Mon Apr 21, 2014 3:09 pm

Hey folks,

Very new to distilling. I have just got my hands on a used keg for a pot still to make some rum.

I was wondering what size fermenter I should buy? I was thinking of a 60 or 80lt fermenter.

Any sugestions?

I use plastic containers from bunnings 30l pretty cheap there near the eskys then go to the plumbing section and get yourself a plastic tap. If you want to go bigger i noticed some people on here buy those goldy brown coloured olive drums which are food grade and alot bigger :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Cheers, so your saying it would be cheaper to not get a fermenter and just buy a food grade container and tap?

I got myself a 60L fermenter thinking my 50L boiler with a 40L charge would need 2 of my beer sized fermenters for a run. I've ended up with a 220L drum and love it. With the pot still I assume you are going the rum/whiskey route. By the time you do enough stripping rums for a spirit run the 220L gets you there very fast. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

For me a 200 ltr drum for my favorite washes, and a couple of 60 ltr fermentors for trial or test washes :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I just use 60L wheelie bins from cheap as chips, with glad wrap or a plastic bag on top :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just from a practical view point user 1 x60lt and 1 x30lt for rums = 90lt potential...

when you add head space to fermenters cause rums froth up a bit and the fact you need head space in 50lt keg, say 40 lt fill the two fermenters combined provide enough wash to do 2 still runs perfectly.

i find the 220L hdpe drums are good for tried and true recipes whereas an 80L drumis good for an experiment. My boiler sizeis 80L so i get 60L in there with no chance of boil over

What state do you live in? , paramount Browns in sa have a few different types of food grade containers. I bought a couple of these to store washes in http://www.paramountbrowns.com.au/index ... iners-76l/
I'm completely new as well though so I'm sorta finding my feet. I can already see myself getting sick of using my 30ltr beer fermenter and upgrading to a 200ltr http://www.paramountbrowns.com.au/index ... rums-200l/

I tried the 30ltr beer fermenters for awhile.
Then 50ltr stainless keg
But it meant a lot of small stuff laying around taking up bench space.

So now I use this - a 300ltr rainwater tank.
DSCN3985 (Copy).JPG

It takes up minimal space and sits outside.
Can get 6 plus distilling runs out of it....
You just have to be sure that the wash you are making is one you reeeeeeeally want.
Otherwise you are stuck with a lot of something you don't care for.

I tried these guys and they quoted $55 for the 60lt carboy. I told them the price was only $33 from Plasdene so they gave me a price of 36 + gst. They are at least a 30 min drive closer so I paid the extra couple bucks.
