soldering-brazing stainless steel

Postby garouda » Tue Jun 24, 2014 5:02 pm

Hello,

The set-ups I explained at the welcome page imply a lot of welding. I don't have that equipment (TIG). I will go for either soldering with a propane torch or brazing with an oxyacetylene torch. The most difficult will be to fit ferrules and pipes together. What would be the best practice and type of alloy-flux?
Thanks a lot

Ezi-weld 801 is your friend for soldering or brazing stainless.
Not ezi to find though :teasing-neener:

What rods are you using to braze your copper to stainless? The one I was planning to use I am not sure if it is safe to use.
Any info would be great.

Mate, check out a thread by Mac on soldering stainless to copper. It's exactly what you're after, and works a charm. There's an example of my attempt with pictures in my 6 Week build thread too.

Use 15% silver brazing rods or if you can afford them 45% silver bearing rods although the 45% are not good for joining large gaps in the joints, so tight fitting joints and use a stainless wire brush to clean up the metals surface around the joint before applying a brazing flux paste to the joint an over the rods when using the oxy torch. Don't cook the stainless for too long when your brazing as it will burn out the chromium in the stainless steel taking away its corrosion protection. cheers

Sorry, wasn't exactly Mac's thread, but his posts.

Here's what I was thinking of: HERE.

Page 2 has a pic of the Ezi-Weld 801, and page 3 has a comment from Mac on the process.

That's all you need :handgestures-thumbupleft: (This is for soft-soldering ferrules to pipe, where there is only minimal gap).

Ifn ya go for brazeing I use only BOC 45t rods with the blue flux coating, will do stainless to copper ,stainless to stainless and copper to copper very well with no extra flux needed. :text-+1: on not over heating ya stainless it oxidizes and from there the braze will not stick and flow ,requiring you ta re-polish and sand off the blackened stainless.cheeers hillzabilly :handgestures-thumbupleft:

shipment a bit expensive but "Qui veut la fin, veut les moyens!" (who wants the end, wants the means) :teasing-tease:
I will need this for my next project (Ø 6" plated column), for my current still, I found a guy down the town who did the TIG welding for me (SS pipes/SS ferrules).

Lol good to see your still around, coming back to a 7year old thread.

I've used eziweld801 for my stainless to copper joins.
I don't apply any heat directly to the flux or stainless.
Just to the copper and the heat soaks in eventually.
Has worked for my 4" still so far.

I would avoid the oxy set unless you have small tips to minimise the heat input, it works too hot and burns it all to quick.
