Storage - how much is unsafe?

Postby jeh » Sat Oct 04, 2014 8:09 pm

Hi, been thinking about this for a few weeks now, how much spirit does everybody store in their places? 20l, 50l, more? I'm thinking along the lines of fires. It throws up an interesting situation re insurance policies - they may be voided if the companies find out, they may view it in the same light as storing jerry cans of petrol around the place. Thoughts people?

Anything I store at high proof is in a fire locker outside that is kept locked ;-)

If your whole house burns down I don't think anyone will notice a bit of grog going up with it :))

I was thinking the same but in turns of legality.
You would imagine anything you have would be counted against you; form your foreshots down.
I've been doing several different spirits and as a consequence have feints by the litre.

Well if your insurance company could prove you burnt your house down from operating a still illegally then you would be screwed :law-policered:

As for your house burning down from another cause and all evidence being erased then I don't see a big problem ;-)

Don't worry mate it's perfectly normal. 40% is considered the threshold of flammability but it will ignite below that given the right conditions.

40% won't ignite until it gets to something like 30° :-B
Try warming it up a little :teasing-tease:

check the flashpoints- 40% should ignite, but will probably burn itself out fairly quickly
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ethan ... d_989.html

storage depends on when i am on generations. by the 5th generation i have a decent amount waiting to be run + what is oaking and previous feints. is it likely that the alcohol would be a source of ignition? unlikely. would it be an accelerant- definitely. if you are worried check your housing insurance policy. it will likely have figure for the amount of flammable material is acceptable to be stored, though my guess is probably about 20L (a jerry can of petrol)

Doesn't get more simple then that

I've always worked on the principle that If me house goes up in flames, i will just tell the Fireys that if they can save that cupboard...... I'll share the contents with them :handgestures-thumbupleft:
