How many circuit test before use, get the multi meter out, know what the multi meter is telling them, re check wiring, connectors etc...

Both have their risks lets be reasonable about that at least.

I am being reasonable, fuck gas !!!

About 20 something bubbler builds ago after a fire I switched to electric, running my still has been a pleasure since without the extra worry.

My electric boiler is wired correctly and is run through a switchboard rated well above what I draw from it, it is also protected by circuit breakers that will trip the instant something should go wrong.....

Fuck gas ;-)

Totally agree that both have risks, just gas has a more volatile component........

Each to their own choice in fuel source btw.

My gas burner is a "BD747" style that has a 1 metre long steel header, a spiral wound hose, HP regulator & a flash back arrestor for good measure. I only used it outside as a safety precaution.
My shed is professionally wired with enough EL protected power outlets that I could run 3 x 3,600watt elements all at the same time if I wanted, heavy duty 15 amp extension cords & I get electricians to wire up everything to ensure its done safely. Now I can run the still inside & its quiet.......

But agree you have to watch elec too,I used a old multi power plug thing when I first started and it started to melt.upgradeed after that's.

I run my still inside , it runs on gas. Electricity is not an option anyhow but I love the fact that I can make second to second changes to the energy input. My first boiler was electric and I could change the energy input by unplugging it. Anyhow I'm not in a position to use electricity even if I should want to but am pretty happy with how it runs on gas, I would like to change to natural gas down the track though

I like running on gas .
I like the fact that it has dangers. It keeps me thinking and on the ball.
The OP made more than one mistake and I commend his honesty
Mistake 1. He has a kink in the hose that he knows could cause an issue
2 he let someone else control a critical part of his still without checking
3 he made modifications to his still set up and didn't test it with a water run
4 his gas line is not correctly tethered (hose clamp)
5 he left his still running by itself.


Thank you for your honesty Urrazeb I have learned from your mistake and that is at least two of us now.
Hope you runs all go smooth from now on.
Remember people "Familiarity breeds contempt. In this hobby contempt blows your shed apart. And that would be awaited of some damned fine hooch.
