American White Oak

Postby CaptainRedBeard » Sat Oct 11, 2014 11:21 am

I bought 2kg of this stuff, medium toasted. Cost $64 in total(shipping included). Price wise it seemed pretty good. Not sure on whether it's good quality or not, haven't oaked with Domino's before.
Am I meant to rinse the timber dust off before oaking? Or is it good to go?

These look very similar to the dominos I have. I'm getting close now to finally being able to use them with some rum going down that will need oaking when it's ready. I tried putting some in my demijohns but they're too wide to fit through the top.... Is it fine to just split them in half to make them fit? What would be the easiest way to split them? Didn't think taking a saw to them would be a good idea...

That seems a little expensive CRB  Ya don't have to rinse especially as you should filter it before bottling

I use a hatchet to split them down the grain sinergee

Where did you get them from?

Pretty sure they're some from one of the group buys. They were given to me as a sample a few months ago as I was using HBS chips. I unfortuntely had to put production on hold for a few months to move states so haven't had a chance to try them out yet.

If you decide to heavy char a number of them then a quick quenching in hot water straight off the charring removes that heavy smoke taste they develop in spirit.
It initially sounds appealing to have heavy smoke but it does get a tad boring/dominates the spirit, ok for a few batches or if your seeking that taste profile.

For a finished product can't comment on the price. But for comparo's sake if you have a jigsaw/bandsaw and method to toast & char Tubbies in Adelaide Hills sell a 8kg bag of clean new timber white oak off cuts for $10. I've no method to estimate your freight cost but if we said $40 would cover it?

Stand up straight, small tap with a hammer & screwdriver from top will split them with ease.

Awesome I'll just split them then. Was a little worried it might be exposing too much end grain. Cheers guys :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Splitting them long ways shouldn't expose much more end grain...

Sorry for the late reply, my email notifications have been stuffing up.

I got them off ebay, was desperate at the time.

Got 3kg off Choppy now, a roll out the Barrell bunch, so I'm loaded up now.

Only problem with not being in Adelaide tubbies don't freight their off cuts. Does anyone know anywhere in WA that you can buy white oak that isn't brew shop chips?
