Picked up a couple of old water fire extinguishers.
I have given them a good clean inside with soapy hot water and rinsed with my Gerni. I thought I might give them an acid soak too? (not sure about that) The label says they are Stainless Steel, but 1965 ss might not be up to par? One has a s/s plug and the other has a brass plug. They seal up water tight real good.
So my questions are, would these make good storage for aging high proof whiskys and rums? Should I just use a cork to seal them? Or make them air tight? I have some glass demijohns that I age and oak in at the moment. Should I oak my spirits in the demijohns and then decant for long term storage in the fire extinguishers for aging with no, or minimal oak?
The label says 2 imperial gallons, Just in case you thought they might be Metric gallons!! But I reckon they would hold about 15 lt each, filled to the brim.
Cheers Phil
