OAK BARRELS... 200lit

Postby Kenster » Thu Feb 23, 2017 8:09 pm

I noticed the other day the Big Green Shed has oak barrels (aprox 200lit) for $199...(assuming they are sound/leak proof...didnt have a close look)
Heres the thang... i know it is not advisable to age a small volume of spirit, say 20lit, in a very large barrel...volume v spirit contact...i get that a smaller , say full 10lit barrel will age faster (maybe better).
Is there any merit whatsoever in ageing 20 odd lit of spirit in a 200lit barrel... will it spoil/ leak. I was hoping to use it as a kind of 'top up' vessel and keep adding to it as each batch was ready.
Dumb?

Unfortunately I would think you would over oak what you put in, in no time with those quantities.

A barrel won't stay sealed unless it's full, and a barrel from Bunnings has probably been sprayed with a fungicide/sealer etc to prevent it from rotting.

A barrel needs to be kept at least 3/4 full. Not sure how long those would have been sitting around and as mentioned since they are more designed for garden use if they have been treated. RollOutTheBarrel has 200L ones from $250 which are guaranteed fresh and serviced.
