Dark rum

I've read that dark Jamaican rums get their colour from the aging process. I suspect this has been augmented by additives.
Has anyone experimented with dark rum?

Have a google for Buckaneer Bobs Rum. He does something that brings about a dark rum... other than that, I believe they use molasses only and loads of oak; but don't quote me on that!
