5 or 10 liter barrel

hi guys im looking at buying a new american oak barrel.

both the 10 and 5 liter barrels are in my price range but im not sure which one will suite my needs. i am hoping to age for 6 months to a year.

im going to be aging BWKO and the barrel is heavy char.

any thoughts?

5 litre is too small for 6 month aging, 10 litres is better, might be ready by 6 months though, and over oaked at 12. You will have to sample along the way.

I reakon my rum is pretty good at about 3.5months. I then age a further month in a demi with french oak.10l barrel. If I wasn't such a rum pig it would stay in longer.

equipment: 2" pot with 2" shotty 400mm long 5x 1/2" on a t500 boiler.
50l keg boiler 4" still mount 4" sight glass 1" drain..
4 plate 4" bubbler, 600mm packed section

The first couple of batches will colour quickly 2-3 months but as the barrel gets older it will slow down :handgestures-thumbupleft:

equipment: 4 plate 6" copper bubbler, 6 plate 4" glass bubbler with 500mm packed section three way thumper sitting on a 50 ltr keg boiler with 6000watts, 2" pot still and a 2" boka.
