I’m getting a barrel

So I’ve bit the bullet and placed an order for a 20L barrel from rotb. Swmbo reckons I go French oak but I don’t know. I’ve been using offcuts from them for a couple of years and never thought to ask if it’s french or American, or a mix.
So, my question is, would a French or American oak barrel be best for whiskey?

Hard to say very much personell preference. Personally I like a mixture of the two. Time in american oak barrels then time with french dominoes in glass. French I like especially for rum. Brings out the dark fruit flavours 8-}

From memory (yes it has been affected by drinking!) French oak tends to colour more and has more of a sweeter fruitier note than American. I find American more ‘saviory’ ... if that makes any sense!?!

Ive been using a mixture of both, I find it gives me the sweet notes I like in my bourbon.
Ask if you can have a half and half barrel :teasing-neener:

I'd probably go american for bourbon or rye whiskey, french for single malt barley whiskey or rum.

Bloke I bought my 10l off said he could put french oak in the ends. I dare say rotb would do the same on request 8-}

The only solution is ta go with SWMBO,and accidently order one of each,easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission .cheers hillzabilly ;-)

Cheers guys, Ezi I also recall reading that French colours quicker too.
Minpac, I’m definitely more of a scotch drinker than American bourbon so perhaps French is more to my taste but hilza definitely has the right idea to accidentally order a barrel of both and try the two side by side.
Sorry swmbo(s) (she who must be obeyed sometimes) :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:
