American Oak Barrel

Postby QLD.Andy » Sat Mar 19, 2011 8:01 pm

Here is mine, little 9 litre :D
I filled and left for 1 month then started drinking from it, much nicer.
I have just refilled with nearly 7 litres and will see how long it takes to come good again.
They come from either http://www.rolloutthebarrel.com.au or call Craig from http://www.tru-brew.com.au/
Both will be happy to ship.
Oh, if you go through Craig - tell him I sent you :)

Now that's a nice bit of kit there, I have one full of rum around here somewhere but it's not as pretty as that one.

Cheers.

That is a nice looking barrel for sure. I'd love to have a couple or even one 50L barrel.
My stuff ages in glass with oak sticks, well sometimes it lasts long enough to get a bit of color.

A 50 ltr barrel would be AWSOME :) That 9 ltr one looks flash as.

I got a 300 ltr barrel and broke it up to go in demijohns but it's not the same as having a barrel.........

Quick update.
After the refill I left it for 1 month before trying and it wasnt good, tasted really wooden.
I have been tasting every couple of weeks since then and its only now that is become drinkable again.

So...whats the 'refill' story, QLD.Andy?
I'm wondering if you could please tell me/us(?) how the refill spirit improves with age.....as it should, afterall! ;) thanks

They're great people at roll out the barrell, that's where i've got mine from too.

Better way to age is to draw off and top up. What i do is fill the barrell, then draw off a litre or two and top it up with white dog. Take your couple of litres and sit it on some oak sticks to finnish for a couple of weeks before breaking it down to 40% and bottling. If you have three or four of finnishing jars you won't run out as easily, ones ready to bottle and the next ones ready next fortnight sorta thing.

This is the three sisters. 3 identical 50l barrels, all holding ujsm atm..

Next barrel will be a 100l jobbie for bulk ageing ujsm for two-three years.

I refilled with finished Bourbon, its ended up being smoother and milder and along the way has picked up some oak overtones.

I've thought fairly hard about security. There's quite a few levels.

The locks are because it is poison really in some of the strengths we deal in.

I've always thought about what a bastard i was from the age of 8 or 10 and what i'd get up to. It would horify me to see a story come out about a group of kids who broke into someones shed and drunk enough 95+ to kill them.
That's why i never keep it at 95+

Hi folks a VERY fine mate of mine visited on the weekend and bought me a present of a 25l (?) American OAK barrel from 'Roll Out The Barrel Cooperage' at Clontarf,QLD. Its a fine thing and, as per instructions, I've 'immediately' pretty well filled it with PALE DRY SHERRY  from the cheap end of town liquor stores to help it 'season'. :? ;)

Now I need to work out just what is the PLAN re getting a bloody good Scotch 'stockpile' going and maturing in this wonderful gift. All tips gratefully received (eg any other seasoning ideas, stages of filling with spirit, oaking spirit before adding, suggested ABV%, etc). BTW, I have read all (?) previous info on this, both here and in other threads so I am not asking for anyone to repeat their info, just wondering if there's more I could learn now. Thank you.

Can only say (without repeating myself0 that most times you don't need o fill a barrell with a sacrificial charge, just throw a few litres in and turn it once or twice a day to coat the insides.

Mate, I've always associated cheap sherry with grandparents. So...QLD.Andy ( :o ), would YOU like the contents before I clean the drains with it???

Thanks 5Star, I am being a bit short on my sacrificial filling (being a tightarse), so a good keg turn or two a day sounds like fine advice to me. All other requests for information remain open BTW as I'd love to work towards a finished product that befits said fine receptacle..... ;)

(Oh, and McStill et al, thanks for putting up with my 'email dumbness' for 100 posts and counting. You have all hereby passed "Patience 101" :D )
