My 1/2 liter open top sampling barrel :))
Have to soak it an hour or two before use, it's very loose when dry

Mate if you search around you'll find a chart with a barrel comparing litres verses aging as a comparison to full barrels. From this you'll likely decide a new 5L barrel will reach its peak before 12m's.
Ymmv and if you like it then simply ignore everyone else's tastes but I'd suggest at a minimum monthly 1/2shot samples... Topping up with new make spirit.

:text-+1: even my 20ltr barrel coloured up/aged real quick the first time. Only about 3 months. You will find the more you use it the slower it will get, mine is well over 18 months to age properly now. It's probably due for a revamp now.

That’s a scary thought (for me) as I live on the ‘pimple’ on the arse of regional Australia where we don’t have normal services let alone specialty services like cooperages ...

So my newest ‘noob’ question is - how long or how many runs do you get out of a barrel before you are at the place you’re currently at with your barrel, WD?

Have had this one for 5 or 6 yrs now, it's French oak but does a very good job of ageing, especially the lesser quality stuff I've been making all this time.

Currently has about 40ltrs which was done with my old rig, and was considering decanting it and putting it through my bubbler once I get that up and running. Would you blokes advise this or just leave it?

You’ll undo all the work/time in the barrel if you put it thru the bubbler.... I probably wouldn’t do that...

I guess it depends weather it taste like crap or not...if it's headsy run slow at start to concentrate heads then fast abv 84-85 to retain some flavour. Slow down towards tails up abv back up round 90 to compress tails :-B

Maybe think about changing that brass tap though.

Yes mate I guess that's why I'm in 2 minds about running it again, it actually tastes quite good but is a bit too woody on it's own. Blended with a neutral brings it back nicely so I think I might leave it.

Thanks scythe I've never even thought about that tap. I've got a couple of stainless replacements here that I can swap out. Cheers.

I've had my barrel for about 4 years now Ezy. It still works fine it just takes longer and doesn't color as much, which is not a bad thing really. I've always done batch in batch out but recently I've been doing 4ltrs out 4 ltrs in cause I haven't been able to run my still as often as I like as it's my busy work season over spring and summer. Another thought I had was to get another one and use that for a quick color/aging and then put it into this barrel for a longer age as it shouldn't over oak now.

You can always add dominoes to demijohn to "flavour and colour" then "age" it in the barrel to finish it off :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Appreciate your guidance, WD.

Sounds a little like the solera method.
