OAK,
is of a personal taste, I find many "big name rums" over oaked, personal preference is mild oak with a sweetness and lots of interesting thoughts on what else I think is in there. You will undoubtedly think different as will your friends; Gin will be the same way I feel. Master/super tasters blend these "products" for the masses and sales statistics, you will make your spirit for a much refined and smaller critical market, "your friends" and you the master home distiller and taster.
As I sit here drinking a fat dram of my sons bottle of Appleton over oaked bitter rum on a 4 cube of ice tumbler, I realize "it really ain't that good". I like to remind myself of such mass marketing toxic blunders every now and then.
So to you, the master home distiller, Oak is of a personal preference, Your friends will judge you harshly, but not to harshly if they're worried about not receiving a fat dram of your home wonderment.
