Where can I find American Oak (SA)

Hi Guys,
Just a quick one, any of you had any luck in finding a source of virgin American oak in SA, preferably off cuts.
I can find chips online (raw and barrels), but I want to make and toast my own staves from virgin wood.

Thought i'd ask here first before is start calling local timber yards. Just in case someone else has already gone through this and can point me in the right direction

Many thanks

Came across this ad:
https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/edwards ... 1220548648

Will try and get a smaller length from the seller. But I'd still be interested if anyone has come across a place that would supply offcuts

I just buy mine through 5Star store , it's already charred and perfect size.
My last batch 1kg french med char was just over $20 + 13.50 postage.
Saves me looking and charring and toasting,
Still miles ahead of the old HBS cordial, turbo's and ect.ect.
Obviously, my opinion

If you get stuck.....this is what I do for all my wine making oak.

I buy used good condition barrels, strip and plane the staves on both sides back to clean wood.
Then chop them up on a cut off saw to manageable sizes.

All the left overs are used for smoking meat.

I want to experiment with roasting and Charing my own oak. See if I can get greater control over flavours emparted

Have alot of experience with using chips, pre-roasted staves and wine barrels staves/chips. But I feel I'm at the mercy of the roaster or the history of the wood here. I want to see if I can instead take some control of that process

That's not to say pre-roasted staves or wine barrels are bad, not at all. More a process of experimentation and personal knowledge gain.
i
It may well end up being one of these situations where the effort is not worth the reward. But gotta try :)

Sorry anubis that was directed at triangle. I agree with you that virgin oak makes a difference you definately get a more authentic bourbon taste from bwko type drinks when using new charred A.O

I don't think tubbies have new raw oak I believe they cut down larger barrels to make the smaller ones. I use their off cuts for my ageing and find them good.
