I've seen quite a few wine barrels on offer on gumtree. Better pets and gardens also had some (saw them being cut in half last time I was there). My mate works in the swan valley and said it was a bit difficult to get a barrel. He got one for me for about $70. Never dream of cutting it up though as it's used as a table outside the bar.

Gumtree prices are around $150ish. A bloke in kalamunda has 38 to choose from http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/lesmurdi ... /343338974

If you want a small amount of American Oak to tide you over till you find a cheap barrel, you can do what i did.
Call into a few Flooring shops, tell them that your looking at buying 150m2, but need to convince the missus on the colour.
they wont mind giving you a sample or two to take home.
Trust me, im a tight arse and it works :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

I'm happy to fill a 3kg satchel with some of their off cuts and post to you for the cost of the satchel if that will help you?

That is a really nice gesture thank you 5Star. Are these off-cuts actually from American Oak barrels or just Oak timber off-cuts...?

Is it the shipping cost or the oak chips themselves that's the problem? edit just a quick check of a courier and auspost and for 20kg its about $60+ from QLD to WA

I suppose its a bit of both Brownie, but I didn't realise postage for 20 kilos was that much. However as 5Star said previously, he used to buy a wheelie bin full for $50. I think like all things though, demand has driven the price up of American and French Oak, especially since home distillers have been getting into using it more and more.

Myself I think you'd be better off looking for a buggered barrel even if its been out in the weather for years wont matter . Plane of shave the surface off and it will be no probs and I reckon keep looking you'll get on cheap

They are the same offcuts that rotb are quoting you on.

The scraps from american oak used to make the barrels. Bodgy staves, the bits the heads are cut from etc.

That works out to be $6.50/kg which is very good when compared to the prices charged by HBS (normally $20+/kg). So while not as cheap as you expected, it does seem cheap to me. Well, not as cheap as butchering a barrel, but at least you'll know it's american oak. Most on gumtree are french oak or don't say the origin of the oak

Can the chips be reused multiple times? Just a matter of re-toasting or charring for each use?

I've found it to be a waste of time, all the good stuff in chips is gone once you've used them once ;-)

Well finally bit the bullet and refurbished that old English rum barrel. I welded up a band for it put it together and belted all the bands back on. The weird thing was I couldn't get the two inside bands back to where they were, would have thought after being empty for many yrs the would be a looser fit not tighter, pretty sure I put the starves back in the same order :?
