I saw the Still It video making a stainless/oak barrel. Well, we have have a lot of baby formula cannisters. They look like stainless inside... how can I be sure?

Most likely tin. Fill with water see if it rusts..

Probably tin with a plastic coating maybe

Does a magnet stick to the tin?

If so it is a poor grade stainless or coated crap....

Cheers

Its a great idea and something many of us want to play with, but im 900% certain those tins aint stainless.

Each one you make will end up essentially a one off, go find a SS pot at a goodwill store.

In addition - a 900g formula tin is not even close to the ball bark for return on time & $$ spent to faf about making it. Think 10+ litres

The manufacturer describes them as 'steel easy open cans'... but they wouldn't be that shiny if they weren't SS. Unless they're tinned.

Might consider using a SS minikeg. But I'm not making anything NEAR 10l yet. I have a 12l boiler! Old mate had a fairly small keg in the vid. A gallon at the mosr.

Why not use the Bain Marie canisters like in the video? I've been looking at doing this exact thing once I get some free time. I bought the 8L ones the same as in the video (cost me about $33 each, should be able to find them cheaper) but the company I bought them from also have 6L, 4L, 3L, 2L & 1.1L ones so there are plenty of size options if 8L is too big...

I saw that video and have been looking at these. First hurdle I've found is finding some "quarter sawn" oak.
I've had a length of oak seasoning for over 2 years. I've just worked out it isn't quarter sawn, so will apparently leak.

If they were stainless the company would make all manner of claims and they would be charging a whole heap more for them.
And yes, tin tins are shiny inside

Wow. I thought his cannisters were custom made. I had to watch with subtitles and they didn't pick up "Bain Marie". :text-thankyoublue:

Looks like there would be way too much oak for the amount of liquid in that canister...
